FA backs Tuchel despite England’s World Cup semi-final exit

England manager Thomas Tuchel has retained the full backing of the Football Association despite his side’s 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The loss ended England’s hopes of reaching their first World Cup final since 1966, with Argentina scoring twice late in the match to overturn a one-goal deficit. Tuchel faced criticism over his substitutions but said he remains committed to leading the team through to the 2028 European Championship.

“We keep on going with the contract until the home Euros,” Tuchel said. “I’m looking forward to that even though right now it’s difficult to look that far ahead.”

FA chief executive Mark Bullingham reaffirmed the association’s confidence in the German coach, praising the efforts of the players, coaching staff and supporters throughout the tournament. He described the semi-final defeat as “heartbreaking” but commended the team for reaching the last four.

Tuchel, who signed a two-year contract extension in February after taking charge in January 2025, is expected to remain in charge as England prepare to co-host Euro 2028 alongside Wales, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland. England will now face France in Saturday’s third-place playoff.
