Former Spain midfielder Gaizka Mendieta has identified Argentina captain Lionel Messi and Spain's teenage sensation Lamine Yamal as the two leading candidates for the 2026 Ballon d’Or award.

Former Spain midfielder Gaizka Mendieta has identified Argentina captain Lionel Messi and Spain’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal as the two leading candidates for the 2026 Ballon d’Or award.

The former Valencia and Barcelona star believes the outcome of the FIFA World Cup final between Argentina and Spain could have a major influence on who eventually takes home football’s most prestigious individual honour.

According to Mendieta, Messi is in a strong position to secure a record-extending ninth Ballon d’Or if Argentina defeats Spain in the World Cup final. The Inter Miami forward has once again demonstrated his quality on the biggest stage, playing a key role in Argentina’s impressive run to the final.

At the same time, Mendieta said Yamal remains a serious contender for the award if Spain succeeds in winning the World Cup. The Barcelona youngster has enjoyed another remarkable season and has continued to establish himself as one of the brightest talents in world football.

Speaking to Goal, Mendieta explained that performances at the World Cup often play a decisive role in determining the Ballon d’Or winner. He noted that Yamal has produced outstanding displays for both club and country despite facing injury setbacks during the campaign.

He also praised the teenager’s importance to Spain’s national team, describing him as one of the key players behind their successful World Cup journey.

Mendieta added that Spain has several players capable of attracting Ballon d’Or attention if they lift the trophy, including forward Mikel Oyarzabal, who has delivered important performances throughout the tournament.

However, Mendieta believes Messi would become the overwhelming favourite if Argentina wins the World Cup.

The football legend has been in sensational form in North America, scoring eight goals and providing four assists. His leadership, experience and ability to deliver in crucial moments have helped guide the reigning world champions back to another World Cup final.

Messi’s performances have further strengthened his case for another Ballon d’Or, with many football fans and analysts viewing him as one of the standout players of the tournament.

Yamal, on the other hand, has scored one goal in seven matches but has impressed with his creativity, dribbling ability and influence in Spain’s attacking play.

The young winger has consistently troubled opposition defences and has been one of the most exciting players to watch during the competition.

The battle for the Ballon d’Or is expected to intensify after the World Cup final, as voters assess both individual performances and team achievements over the past season.

While several players may still enter the conversation, Messi and Yamal currently appear to be the strongest contenders.

With the football world eagerly awaiting the final between Argentina and Spain, the result could not only determine the next world champion but also significantly shape the race for the 2026 Ballon d’Or.
