Ansaru commanders convicted on all 32 terror, kidnap charges

Delivering his ruling, Justice Nwite held that Section 274(2) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act empowers a court to convict a defendant once a guilty plea has been entered.

A Federal High Court has convicted two Ansaru commanders, Mahmud Al-Nigeri and Abu Baraa, on all 32 terrorism and kidnapping charges filed against them.

Justice Emeka Nwite convicted the two men after they changed their pleas and admitted guilt during Monday’s proceedings.

The defendants had been prosecuted on charges relating to terrorism and kidnapping activities.

Delivering his ruling, Justice Nwite held that Section 274(2) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act empowers a court to convict a defendant once a guilty plea has been entered.

The judge consequently found Al-Nigeri and Baraa guilty on all 32 counts.

The court is expected to pronounce their sentences later.
