Super Eagles forward Kelechi Iheanacho has explained the main reason behind his decision to join Turkish second division side Bursaspor.
The 29 year old completed a free transfer to the club last week after leaving Scottish champions Celtic at the end of his contract. Although Celtic were interested in keeping him following his impressive performances last season, both parties were unable to agree on a new contract.
During his time with Celtic, Iheanacho scored several important goals and played a key role in helping the club win a domestic double. His performances attracted interest from other clubs, but he eventually chose Bursaspor and signed a three year contract.
Speaking on the club’s official website, the Nigerian international said Bursaspor’s ambitious plans for the future convinced him to make the move.
According to Iheanacho, the club’s vision of returning to the Turkish Super League and competing in European competitions was a major factor in his decision.
“When I heard the project they have and how they want to go all the way to the Super League and to play in Europe as well, I said this is a big project and it is very good for me to come and be involved and help the team,” he said.
The experienced striker added that he is excited about the new challenge and is determined to contribute with goals, experience and hard work as the club pushes for promotion. He also expressed confidence that the team can achieve its targets with the support of the fans and the commitment of the players and coaching staff.
Iheanacho will now be expected to play a leading role in Bursaspor’s promotion campaign as the club aims to secure a return to the Turkish top flight and rebuild its status as one of the country’s biggest football clubs.
