Infantino’s letter congratulating Argentina on finishing second at the World Cup is leaked

A leaked letter from FIFA President Gianni Infantino praising Argentina’s “professionalism” has emerged while the football governing body investigates the team’s conduct following its World Cup final defeat to Spain.

Argentina lost the 2026 final in extra time at the New York New Jersey Stadium on July 19 before some of its players and officials became involved in a post-match confrontation.

Despite the controversy, Infantino applauded the team’s conduct in a letter addressed to Argentine Football Association President Claudio Tapia.

Congratulatory letters are traditionally sent to the three medal-winning countries after the World Cup. However, Infantino’s choice of words has attracted attention because of the investigation surrounding Argentina’s behaviour.

The letter was first published by Argentine media.

Infantino congratulated Argentina on winning the silver medal and described the tournament as an unforgettable celebration marked by exciting matches, emerging talents, established stars and packed stadiums.

He said Argentina’s performance contributed significantly to the success of the competition and captivated millions of football supporters around the world.

The FIFA president asked Tapia to extend his congratulations to the players, head coach Lionel Scaloni, the coaching and medical teams and Argentina’s supporters.

“These victories are always the fruit of constant work, professionalism and attention to detail, but also of passion, commitment and love for this wonderful sport,” Infantino wrote.

He added that Argentina’s performance pointed to a promising future and could pave the way for further success.

The praise came despite the chaotic scenes that followed Argentina’s defeat.

Members of the Argentina squad turned their backs while Spain’s players lifted the World Cup trophy.

Paredes was also involved in a confrontation with Spain defender Eric Garcia during a post-match fracas that appeared to include Nahuel Molina, Thiago Almada and Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala.

FIFA is investigating the incident.

Argentina, the 2022 champions, also faced criticism over its style of play during the tournament. The team failed to register a shot on target against Spain in the final.

Lionel Messi was accused of attempting to persuade referee Slavko Vincic to send off Marc Cucurella after the Spain defender covered his mouth while speaking to the official.

Argentina had employed a similar approach involving England midfielder Jude Bellingham during the semi-final.

Scaloni’s team also faced accusations of simulation and gamesmanship during its semi-final victory over England.

Its players subsequently drew complaints from British dignitaries after celebrating with a banner carrying the inscription, “Las Malvinas son Argentinas,” meaning “The Falklands are Argentine.”

Infantino, however, concluded his letter by wishing Tapia and Argentina success in future competitions while expressing hope that they would meet again soon.
