NSC Official Wants Support For Table Tennis

The Lagos liaison officer and Assistance Director of National Sport Commission NSC, Mrs. Tayo Oreweme, has charged corporate bodies to sponsor table tennis at the grassroots .

She made this known at the closing ceremony of 3rd liaison office Inter-primary schools table tennis competition which was sponsored by the NSC.

The colourful and well attended ceremony was held at the National Stadium,Surulere, Lagos.

In a chat with journalists, Oreweme said Nigeria can be better in ping pong game if more sponsors show interest in the game.

She believes that lack of competition and inadequate sports facilities in the country for players to train are the major reasons Nigerian players are not performing to expectations in international meets.

“Nigeria can be a table tennis playing nation if more corporate bodies sponsor the game at the grassroots level. We need to encourage school sports if we want to produce future champions. We have gifted players in this country but how many competitions do they play in a month to keep fit for future meets?” she asked.

Meanwhile, over 300 pupils from 26 schools registered for the grassroots ping pong event which was aimed at identifying talents.
