Another Digital TV Hits Market
A new Digital Terrestrial Television Service, GOtv, was launched last week in Ibadan, Oyo State, on the latest DVB-T2 technology by Details Nigeria.
Launching the digital television, the General Manager of the company, Mr. Mayo Okunola said, “What makes this launching so special is that Ibadan is the very place where the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the first Premier of the Western Region, launched Nigeria’s first analogue television almost 52 years ago in 1959. Television in Africa began in Ibadan and no one can take that glory away from the cityâ€.
He said arrangements have been concluded to launch the television in Lagos and other part of the country.
Okunola disclosed that monthly subscription for GOtv with 25 channels and GOtv Plus with 29 channels are N1,000 and N1,800 respectively, stressing that GOtv brand was created to make available an affordable digital television product for everybody.
Channels offered by the pay tv includes African Magic +, African magic yoruba, African magic hausa, AIT, AL jazeera, Channel O, Daystar, Discovery world, E-Entertainment, eTv, Magic World, Nicklodeon, One Gospel, NN24, NTA+, TBN, Style and many others.
He said, “When people think of digital television, they immediately imagine it has to be expensive, that is not the case with GOtv which offers great entertainment at affordable prices. Nigerians will soon have easy access to an increased number of channels, with enhanced picture and sound quality synonymous with digital television. The GOtv channel line-up is also uniquely placed to allow it to become the home of African televisionâ€.
He said the product is already available in Ibadan for sale as it is open to viewers of Ibadan alone until it is launched in other parts of the country.
A statement signed by the chairman of the company, Mr. Adewunmi Ogunsaya, and made available to the press, said the launching of the television represents one of the most advance digital terrestrials television (DTT) broadcast system and infrastructure.
He said, “We have been working closely with the government and the NCC to explore areas of convergence where we can assist to provide affordable digital television for everyone.
Ogunsanya stated that using the latest technology such as DVB-T2 would free more spectrum for other services which could be used for delivery of government programmes such as education, health and other public services.
The company’s Marketing Manager, Mr. Akin Salu, pointed out that GOtv is a product of MultiChoice, adding that a decoder cost N9, 000 alongside three month subscription after which monthly subscription will cost N1,000.
Mr. Ola Ajayi, Oyo State correspondent for Vanguard Newspaper won a GOtv decoder in a raffle draw held during the launch.
Ajayi, a pastor with The Redeemed Christians Church of God (RCCG) thanked the company for giving him the opportunity to have a digital television at home saying, “I am not a lucky person when it comes to raffle but today I thank God who has shown me his mercy. My children will like itâ€.
