Bauchi man arrested for pounding mother to death with pestle

A 20-year-old man identified as Safiyanu Dalhatu has been arrested for allegedly beating his 40-year-old mother, Salma Abdullahi, to death with a pestle in the Abujan Kwata area of Bauchi State.

Ahmad Wakili, the spokesperson for the Bauchi Police Command announced this in a statement.

According to the statement, Dalhatu’s pounding of his mother to death with a pestle was reported to A’ Divisional Police Headquarters on February 24, 2025 by the Peace and Security Committee members of the Abujan Kwata community.

According to the statement, Dalhatu was promptly arrested following the report.

The police spokesperson revealed that initial investigation revealed that the 20-year-old man attacked his mother with the pestle during altercation between them.

“Safiyanu Dalhatu is accused of attacking Salma Abdullahi with a heavy pestle, resulting in fractures to both of her hands as well as other bodily injuries,” Wakili said.

“The Divisional Police Officer, CSP Abdullahi Muazu, promptly led a team of detectives to the scene and subsequently transported the victim to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) in Bauchi for medical attention. Unfortunately, a medical professional later confirmed her death,” the statement read.

Investigation has commenced into the Incident and the pestle used in the incident has been recovered as exhibits.

“Initial investigations suggest that the altercation between the suspect and his biological mother precipitated the assault.”

The investigation is being led by the Criminal Investigation Department as directed by the Commissioner of Police CP Auwal Musa Muhammad.

“Upon the completion of the investigation, the suspect will be prosecuted in a court of law,” the Bauchi Police Command spokesperson concluded.
