In an exclusive interview with PM News, Yewande Zainab Olawepo’s eyes gleam with determination as she shares her vision for Apapa Iganmu, a community she’s called home her entire life.

Growing up in a humble household, Yewande knew firsthand the struggles of her neighbors: inadequate infrastructure, limited access to healthcare and education, and a lack of opportunities for young people.

Despite the challenges, Yewande revealed that her parents instilled in her a strong sense of purpose and a desire to make a difference.

She recalled countless hours spent listening to her parents’ stories about the community’s history and the struggles of its people.

Yewande told PM News that those conversations sparked a fire within her, and fueled the passion to create positive change.

Telling her story, Yewande said: “As I navigated my teenage years, I became increasingly involved in community service. I volunteered at local schools, helped organize health fairs, and participated in neighborhood clean-up initiatives. With each experience, my conviction grew: I knew I was going to dedicate my life to serving people.”

Now, at 26, Yewande is taking a bold step: she’s contesting for the position of councillor in Ward A, Apapa Iganmu.

Speaking on her decision to contest, Yewande attributed her courage to a deep sense of responsibility to represent her constituency, especially the youths.

“As a patriotic citizen, I couldn’t fold my arms and do nothing anymore. I want to serve and I am sure that my people will not regret if I am giving the opportunity.”

Yewande also emphasized the need for economic empowerment, job creation, and infrastructure improvement.

She said: “I plan to promote economic development by supporting small businesses, creating job opportunities, and partnering with political leaders to improve infrastructure in my ward.”

Yewande further expressed her commitment to improving access to healthcare, education, and social services for vulnerable populations.

“I plan to work with local organizations to provide support services for residents affected by crises, such as natural disasters or economic downturns.”

On accountability and transparency, Yewande emphasized the importance of these key factors in her decision-making processes, saying “I believe leadership is an act of service, and I’m here to serve my people. I owe them accountability, accessibility, and transparency.”

Yewande also shared her personal story, highlighting her humble background and determination to make a difference.

“I come from a humble background, but I refuse to let my background define me. I’m committed to using my skills and expertise to benefit the community,” she stated.

She added that the primary election will take place in April or May and she is confident of emerging victorious.
