NURTW Builds Motor Park, Market
The National Union of Road Transport Worker, Owutu Central Park, Ikorodu West, Lagos, southwest Nigeria, has built a modern motor park/market in the area.
The market is located on Fela Ahmeed Road, a former refuse dump site dreaded by the community for its notoriety.
Chairman of the union, Comrade Rotimi Ajayi, said, “Since the Lagos State government approved and allocated the open dump site to us for usage as motor park in 2006, we have been working round the clock not to let our union down and to save our people from road accidents that the present motor park at Agric Bus stop is noted for.â€
According to him, “When we secured the approval from both the state and local governments, we were able to identify the danger in not succeeding in the project and this led us to realise that if not done, the area and of course, commuters will suffer seriously.â€
He lamented that the present motor park at Agric had not been adequate as it was located in a dangerous location where lots of lives had been lost, adding that the NURTW was determined to assist the state government in building a new park.
“The new motor park consists of modern toilet, bathrooms, car wash, canteen and police post. The place is ready for commissioning. The motor park is for everybody and the market will be handled by the market leadership in Lagos State through their representatives at Ajayi Model Market in Ikorodu West,†he stated.
He added that the park would be commissioned for use as soon as the state body of the NURTW completes arrangement with the state government officials who are expected to carry out the commissioning.
Ajayi commended the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation for believing in the ability of the union to handle to project.
