Nigerian Breweries Splash N.9m On Chess Tourney
A total of N890, 000 has been set aside as cash incentive for deserved winners at the 34th edition of the Nigerian Breweries International Chess Championship which will come up in Lagos from 7-12 November.
The Corporate Adviser, Nigerian Breweries Plc, Yesufu Ageni, represented by Mr. Vivian Ikem, the Corporate and Social Responsibility Manager (West), disclosed that the company is committed to the growth of chess in the country and will continue to encourage young and talented players in the brain game.
He said that the prize money to be won in this edition as increased in all the category of play during the competition with the FIDE section winner carting home with the sum of N200, 000 with a giant trophy while the winner in the Ladies section will take home N65, 000.
“For 33 consecutive years, we have partnered with the Nigerian Chess Federation NCF in the quest to encourage the game of chess in the country and we are delighted that most of our targets have been realized and there is need to encourage the players in the quest to reach the peak of their career in chess,†he said.
The President of Nigerian Chess Federation, DCP Sani Mohammed, who was represented by Mr. Femi Solaja a board member, disclosed that the competition will be in eight categories namely: FIDE Section, Category One, Category Two, Ladies, Under-14 Boys and Girls, Sports Writers Section and the Veterans.
He said that some top chess players from Ghana have concluded arrangement to be part of this edition while notable Nigerian players in Diasporas like International Masters Dapo Adu and Odion Aikhoje will feature in the competition.
