Grammy Award-winning Nigerian artiste Burna Boy has come under fire on social media following his appearance at the 2025 Met Gala, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York.
The annual fashion spectacle, themed “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style”, paid homage to the contributions of Black men in fashion history.
Burna Boy, attending the prestigious event for the second time, turned heads in a red tuxedo paired with an oxblood eelskin cape.
The look was curated by British-Ghanaian designer Ozwald Boateng, known as the first Black tailor to open a store on London’s iconic Savile Row.
Despite the significance of his appearance and styling, the singer became a trending topic on X (formerly Twitter), with users mocking the colour of his outfit. One viral tweet likened the ensemble’s tone to Tetracycline, a common antibiotic with a distinctive burnt-orange hue.
The post sparked mixed reactions online. While some users echoed the sentiment and criticized Burna Boy’s fashion sense, others defended him, accusing Nigerians of failing to support their own.
“To be sincere, Burna Boy is not good in fashion,” a user identified as @Godwin_ranking1 posted.
“But no vex, the colour combination no go well in my opinion,” another user, @Big.brother.update1, commented.
However, others came to his defence. “Nigerians will never respect their own,” wrote @B_u_services, while @Evaz_klozetz added, “Fashion inspiration can come from anywhere/anything na. So oga be calming down.”
