The Leader of the Senate, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, has congratulated elder statesman and Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, on his 99th birthday, describing him as a true defender of Yoruba interest and an embodiment of honour and selflessness.

Born on 11 May 1926 in Uso, Ondo State, Pa Fasoranti is a key disciple of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, and a longstanding leader of Yoruba’s foremost socio-cultural group, Afenifere.

In a statement issued on Sunday by his Directorate of Media and Public Affairs, Bamidele lauded Fasoranti’s unwavering dedication to education, political activism, and good governance, noting his legacy as a public servant and community builder.

He recalled the elder statesman’s role as Principal of Oyemekun Grammar School and Iju-Itaogbolu Grammar School in the 1960s and 70s, as well as his founding of Akure High School and Omolere Nursery and Primary School.

“On behalf of all senators from Yoruba-speaking states, we celebrate the patriarch of Yorubaland, a true Omoluabi and an embodiment of humility,” Bamidele said.

He praised Fasoranti’s service as Commissioner for Finance in Ondo State under the late Governor Adekunle Ajasin and his role in the pro-democracy movement that resisted military dictatorship during General Sani Abacha’s regime.

Bamidele said the elder statesman’s contributions to education aligned with the core philosophy of the defunct Action Group and Unity Party of Nigeria, driven by human development.

“Pa Fasoranti remains an inspiration to progressives in the South-west and beyond. As he approaches his centenary, we pray God grants him more years in good health as a unifying figure for all descendants of Oduduwa,” Bamidele added.
