AU Members Contribute Only 2% To Peacekeeping In 3 Years -Official
AU member states contribute only two per cent of the total peacekeeping funds of the organisation Adeyemo Biodun, Head, Finance Division, Peace and Security Department of the Commission has said.
Biodun on Wednesday in Addis Ababa said of the 779.1 million dollars required for various peacekeeping missions across the continent between 2008 and 2011 only 17.7 million dollars was contributed by AU member states.
 Biodun in his presentation titled “Perspective on the Operation of AU Peace Fund’’ at the High-Level Media Workshop on Africa Peace and Security Architecture (APSA) said the the bulk of the funding was provided by donors.
He noted that EU contributed 515.8 million dollars which was 66 per cent of the total sum, while Britain contributed 95.5 million dollars which represents 12 per cent, and Netherlands gave out 38.8 million dollars or five per cent of the organisation’s total peace funding.
He said Canada had also contributed 26.3 million dollars, the Arab League 18.9 million dollars and other donors contributed the balance 65.8 million dollars.
He said AU member states contributed only five per cent to the peacekeeping fund in 2007.
Adeyemo said out of the total expenditure, African Mission in Sudan had the highest allocation of 515.4 million dollars or 66 per cent, and Liaison offices got 19.5 million dollars.
He said 208.3 million dollars was spent on African Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), while other peace programmes were allocated US35.9 million dollars.
Adeyemo said in 2011, AMISOM got the highest allocation of 178.6 million dollars representing 81 per cent of the total allocation of 219,747,730 million dollars while Conflict Prevention, AU Standby Force, Capacity Building, and Liaison Offices among others got the remaining 19 per cent of the fund.
He said there was an urgent need for the Commission to find an alternative source of funding as there were signs of donor fatigue.
