On Same Sex Marriage

Since the debate over same sex marriage took place on the floor of the Nigerian Senate, reactions have trailed it in torrents, most of them condemning those who came up with the idea in the first place. The bill for a law to legalise same sex marriage (lesbianism and homosexuality) was said to have been sponsored by diaspora Nigerians.

The group of diaspora Nigerians who were at the senate to defend the bill recently, laboured  in vain to convince the lawmakers and other stakeholders to endorse this demand. Looking at it from whatever angle, whether the moral or religious angle, same sex marriage is abhorrent and we think this idea that was shut down during the Obasanjo presidency as being frivolous should not be allowed to receive official stamp of approval in this term.

One, humanity will not be perpetuated if this is allowed.  The irony of it all is that those clamouring for same sex marriage are in the habit of adopting children. Children born by straight couples!  The consequences of allowing same sex marriage to take root in our country are too grave to contemplate and so must be avoided. The major religions frown at it, for it is the legal union of man and woman that God permits. This is explicitly affirmed in the Book of Leviticus.

The Quoran also does not approve it, neither does our culture permit it. It is simply against natural order for a man to marry another man or for a woman to do same. Diseases such as cancer of the mouth and throat also emanate from oral sex promoted by lesbians. Those agitating for legalisation of same sex marriage will not tell their unsuspecting converts hard truths about the dangers inherent in it.

Nigerian legislators should not be hoodwinked by the plaintive cries of the Nigerians in the Diaspora for the legalisation of same sex marriage. It is not all aspects of foreign culture, especially the unrestrained exercise of freedom, that should be exported to our country. This request should be discarded by the Senate in favour of more pressing  national issues such as the security problems we are facing, poor electricity supply, bad roads, falling standard of education and degenerating health infrastructure.

It is a big joke for Britain to tie its aid to Commonwealth countries to the legalisation of same sex marriage in countries where it is currently outlawed. Nigeria should call United Kingdom’s bluff and devise ways of being self-reliant through its abundant resources.
