Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of two eminent Nigerians — retired Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Muhammed Lawal Uwais, and renowned academic and diplomat, Professor Jubril Aminu — describing them as patriots who served the nation with distinction and honour.

In condolence letters to the bereaved families, made public by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, on Sunday, Obasanjo extolled the legacies of both men, saying they left indelible marks in their respective fields.

On Justice Uwais, who served as the Chief Justice of Nigeria from 1995 to 2006, Obasanjo noted that his leadership helped restore public confidence in the judiciary after the country’s return to democracy in 1999. He described Uwais as a jurist of integrity who was instrumental in ensuring judicial independence and promoting the rule of law during a critical period in Nigeria’s history.

“Justice Uwais epitomised the qualities of an eminent jurist and elder statesman. Even after retirement, he remained active in national service, including his role in the Electoral Reform Committee and in the Committee for the Goodness of Nigeria (CGN),” Obasanjo wrote.

Similarly, the former President paid glowing tribute to Prof. Jubril Aminu, a former Minister of Education and Petroleum, Nigerian Ambassador to the U.S., and two-term senator representing Adamawa Central. He described the late academic as a rare blend of scholar, administrator, and diplomat whose impact was felt nationally and internationally.

“Professor Aminu was a firm believer in democracy and participatory governance. He served the nation in various high-profile roles and distinguished himself with dedication and commitment. His name resonates in our national history as one of Nigeria’s most outstanding elder statesmen,” Obasanjo stated.
