Transport Union Leaders Arraigned, Remanded In Police Custody
An Isabo High court today ordered that all the 22 accused members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria, RTEAN.
arraigned before it be remanded in the custody of the police till the next adjournment date.
The accused persons were those arrested in Ijebu Ode last week on the orders of the governor of the state, Ibikunle Amosun for allegedly causing causing unrest.
They allegedly hired members of cult groups to settle scores
with rival transport unions in the state.
When the accused persons were arraigned today, the presiding judge ordered that the accused be remanded at the State Police
Command headquarters, Elewe Eran in Abeokuta till 2 December, 2011 when the case will come up again.
Among those arraigned were Alhaji Bashiru Yekeen,a.k.a. Aweda, Alhaji Jimoh Mogaji a.k.a. Aluji of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Alhaji Waheed Oshinowo, a.k.a. Otto, Alhaji Titilayo Akibu, a.k.a. Efele of RTEAN, Nurudeen among others.
Meanwhile one of the boys declared wanted by the police, Sikiru
Bakare, a.k.a. Ojingolo was today seen at the police headquarters in Abeokuta writing his statement.
The state governor had on Tuesday last week proscribed both union in Ijebu-Ode due to killings by cult groups in the town.
Over 20 people have been killed during the violent clashes.
