40 killed as London-bound Indian plane crashes

A devastating plane crash occurred near Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Thursday, when an Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner bound for London’s Gatwick Airport went down shortly after takeoff.

The incident, which happened at around 1:39 pm local time, claimed the lives of at least 40 people.

242 people passengers were onboard, including 169 Indians, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian. 10 crew members and two pilots were part of the flight.

The last  signal from the plane was said to have been received  seconds after takeoff. The pilot reportedly gave a Mayday call to Air Traffic Control moments before the crash.

Already rescue teams have been mobilized to the site with medical aid.

Indian  Aviation Minister, Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu directed all aviation and emergency response agencies to take swift action. The Prime Minister. Narendra Modi on his own part, spoke to the Civil Aviation Minister and Home Minister, asking them to ensure all possible assistance is extended to those affected.
