The Presidency on Thursday  issued an official apology and correction following an error made in the Democracy Day Honours’ List read by President Bola  Tinubu while  addressing the joint session of the National Assembly earlier today.

In a statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the State House admitted that two prominent Nigerians, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, leader of Afenifere, and veteran journalist and activist Dr. Edwin Madunagu were wrongly listed under the Posthumous Award category during the commemorative event.

The statement notes that both individuals are alive and were mistakenly included in the section meant for those being honoured posthumously for their contributions to the nation’s democratic evolution.

The statement reads: “We sincerely regret this oversight. We shall make the necessary corrections across all State House digital platforms”.

President Tinubu had earlier on Thursday morning rolled out a list of pro-democracy activists and national figures to be honoured for their pivotal roles in Nigeria’s journey back to civilian rule, following decades of military dictatorship.

While the  gesture was met with applause from the general public, the misclassification has  sparked concern among Nigerians, especially those familiar with the public stature and ongoing engagements of both Fasoranti and Madunagu.

However, the Presidency has assured the public that appropriate rectifications will be made, even as the administration continues to celebrate individuals and groups who stood for justice, freedom, and democracy in Nigeria’s challenging political history.
