Ex-Lawmaker Seeks Improved Funding For SSS

Chief Stanley Ohajuruka, a former member of the House of Representatives, has called on government to adequately fund the State Security Services (SSS) to enable it to tackle the security challenges in the country.

Ohajuruka made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Umuahia.

He said that the recent foreign security reports about impending terrorist attacks on some buildings in the country should not be wished away.

The former lawmaker therefore, appealed to Nigerians not to panic as the Federal Government had done well in containing security challenges in the country through the SSS.

Particular commendation should go to the SSS given the condition (in which) they are operating. They have done well for now.

“Nigerians should commend them; they have been wonderful because there is gradual reduction though it is not being reported.

“With proper funding and orientation these challenges will be better served.”

Ohajuruka said that the public owe it a duty to report security breaches to appropriate authorities before such breaches became huge threats to the society.

“These people live within us. We see them perpetrate evil and sometimes they are even commended.

“Sometimes when you see the security people on a shoot-out with armed robbers you see people clapping hands.

“This is not something you see in other climes. Education is very important – from the primary to the higher institutions in Nigeria.”
