Africa’s last hope, Mamelodi Sundowns’ hopes of advancing in the FIFA Club World Cup came to an end after a goalless draw against Brazil’s Fluminense on Wednesday evening.

Despite starting with the same lineup that lost to Borussia Dortmund, Masandawana were unable to find the breakthrough they needed to progress.

Fluminense, on their part, made changes, notably leaving out veteran defender Thiago Silva.

The South African champions began brightly, with Tashreeq Matthews testing Fluminense goalkeeper Fabio early on. Just moments later, Divine Lunga’s effort also forced a sharp save.

Fluminense grew into the game and almost opened the scoring through Inacio, who headed just wide from a corner. Jhon Arias also came close, flashing a shot across the face of goal after finding space in the box.

Sundowns made a change at halftime, bringing on Jayden Adams for Teboho Mokoena.

The Brazilians narrowly escaped going behind when German Cano’s shot struck the outside of the post after beating defender Keanu Cupido to a cross. Cupido, injured in the process, was replaced by Mosa Lebusa. Arthur Sales also came on for Matthews.

As the second half wore on, chances became rare with both sides locked in midfield battles and heavy challenges. Despite their best efforts in the closing stages, neither team could break the deadlock.

The draw meant Sundowns finished third in their group, bringing their tournament run to an end, while Fluminense secured a spot in the Round of 16.

Moreso, all four Brazilian teams made it to round of 16, European teams have dominated the competition with 8 teams making it through, others came from America and Asia.
