Ondo State Police Command has arrested a chief in Ondo for allegedly kidnapped raping a 12-year-old girl.
The suspect named Chief Adeniyi Ifedayo was the traditional ruler of the Laaagba community in Ondo East.
He was said to have lured the girl into his house where he held her for two weeks and sexually assaulted her.
Mr Olayinka Ayanlade, the public relations officer of the Ondo police command confirmed the arrest of the suspect.
“The case has been transferred to the headquarters, and a thorough investigation is ongoing,” he said.
The state chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists have however, condemned the case.
Mrs Tola Gbadamosi, the Chairperson and secretary of the group stated that the security agencies should ensure that the suspect faces the consequences of his actions.
“The association demands transparency and accountability in the investigation and prosecution of the case, and stands with the victim and her family, urging them to cooperate fully with the authorities. NAWOJ has also called on parents, guardians, and communities to be vigilant in protecting children from abuse and exploitation. The association’s demands justice and accountability in this case highlight the need for a swift and decisive response to protect the rights and dignity of the child,” the statement reads.
