Rivers Crisis: Fubara distances self from 2027 campaign materials, calls for peace

Quick Read

During a peace meeting last week at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Tinubu urged both leaders to work together for the progress of the state.

Suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has denied any involvement in the production of campaign materials for the 2027 general elections.

Speaking to his supporters in Port Harcourt on Saturday, Fubara said he was shocked when he saw a video showing people making caps and shirts bearing his name and suggesting his intention to run in 2027.

He stressed that he never authorised anyone to produce such items.

“I was really angry when someone forwarded the video to me,” he said. “I don’t know anything about those campaign materials. I did not approve them, and I did not send anyone to produce them.”

Fubara explained that his focus at this time is to ensure peace returns to Rivers State so that development can continue.

He enjoined his followers to prioritise peace above every other interest.

“All of us must understand that what we need now is peace so that we can grow. We have done our best, and it is only peace that will allow us to achieve more for our people,” he added.

His comments come after President Bola Tinubu intervened in the prolonged political crisis in Rivers State. The crisis, which involved Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, led to Fubara’s suspension for six months. President Tinubu had declared a state of emergency in the state but later called for a resolution between both parties.

During a peace meeting last week at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Tinubu urged both leaders to work together for the progress of the state.

Fubara has since called on his supporters to respect the peace agreement and avoid any actions or statements that could reignite tension in the state.

He reaffirmed his commitment to serving the people of Rivers State, saying his only desire is to see the state grow and remain united despite political differences.
