The Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has renamed the Kano State Sports Institute and the Kano Sports Commission to honour the memory of 22 athletes who died in a tragic road accident in May 2025.
Governor Yusuf made this announcement during a ceremony held at the Government House in Kano, according to a report by BBC Hausa on Sunday.
He explained that the new names were chosen to ensure that the young athletes are never forgotten for their contributions and dedication to sports in the state.
From now on, the Kano State Sports Institute will be called the Kano State 22 Athletes Sports Institute, while the sports commission will be known as the Kano State 22 Athletes Sports Commission.
“These athletes brought pride and honour to Kano State. They represented us well in national competitions, and it is only right that we remember them forever. We will not forget their sacrifices and the dreams they had for themselves, their families, and our state,” Governor Yusuf said with emotion during his speech.
The accident happened on the Kano-Zaria expressway while the athletes were returning home after participating in a national sports competition. Reports revealed that most of the victims were teenagers and young adults, full of dreams and hope for a better future through sports.
Their deaths caused deep sorrow and mourning, not only among their families but also among sports lovers and the entire people of Kano State and Nigeria as a whole. Many described the incident as a great loss to the country’s sports development.
Governor Yusuf assured the families of the deceased that his government would continue to support them and that efforts were being made to improve transportation safety for athletes and officials travelling for competitions.
“We will continue to pray for their souls to rest in peace and provide the needed support to their families. We will also ensure that such a tragedy does not happen again in our state,” he added.
