American-Ghanaian singer and songwriter, Amaarae, has shed light on the cultural and historical reasons behind Ghanaians’  love for eggs.

In an interview with media personality Madame Joyce, the “Sad Girls Love Money” hitmaker explained that the tradition of including eggs in most Ghanaian meals dates back to times when meat was considered a luxury, often reserved for the head of the household.

“There is a whole history to that,” Amaarae began. “Back in the days, your father would get the most meat in the food. If your mum cooked stew or something else, all the meat would go to your dad. So the kids got a small piece of meat, plus eggs, to make up for their protein.”

She added that eggs became a staple in Ghanaian homes due to their affordability and nutritional value.

“That’s why egg has become like a staple in our country—it’s a cheap add-on to get protein if meat is too expensive. Back then, chicken used to be a Christmas luxury. Now it’s normal.”
