The Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, says science and technology are very important for world peace, stability, and security.

He said this when Dr. Robert Floyd, the Executive Secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organisation (CTBTO), visited him in Abuja.

According to Nnaji, Dr. Floyd’s visit will help strengthen cooperation between countries in using science and technology for peace and development.

“Nigeria is proud to be part of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT). We recognise CTBTO’s efforts in promoting global stability by checking and monitoring nuclear activities,” he said.

He explained that as nuclear science, digital intelligence, and geospatial technologies continue to grow, Nigeria wants to partner with CTBTO to improve its own knowledge and support the global mission of the treaty.

Nnaji added that the ministry is working towards a future where policies are based on data, and where local innovation and new technologies are fully used.

“With seismic monitoring stations, data hubs, and knowledge networks, we want Nigerian scientists, engineers, and innovators to play important roles in CTBT’s verification work,” he said.

He also stated that innovation is not just about creating new things but about thinking differently to bring lasting progress.

“Your visit should lead to stronger technical partnerships with Nigerian scientists. Our work with global bodies like CTBTO and UNESCO shows our commitment to using science, technology, and innovation for diplomacy and development,” he added.

Dr. Floyd said CTBTO helps maintain global peace by ensuring countries do not test nuclear weapons.

He praised Nigeria for supporting CTBTO’s work and highlighted Africa’s commitment to stopping the spread of nuclear weapons, noting that 52 out of 54 African countries have signed the CTBT, and 50 have ratified it.
