Veteran Nigerian rapper, Ice Prince Zamani, has voiced his anger over what he describes as a lack of recognition and respect for his contributions to the African music industry.
During a conversation on the Tea With Tay podcast, hosted by Taymesan, the “Oleku” crooner didn’t hold back in expressing his disappointment about being sidelined by younger artistes and industry stakeholders despite his pioneering achievements.
“The first African artist to go on a BET stage and collect the BET award. Selfless credit here,” Ice Prince stated. “I’ve done so many things for Nigeria, for Africa, but people always disrespect or sleep on me.”
Ice Prince also noted how he left Chocolate City — the record label that launched his career — without the kind of public drama that followed the exits of other major signees like Brymo and M.I.
“I am probably one of the only artists in the world who left his label with no drama,” he added. “Pretty much, there was drama with everybody else. You just hear some drama.”
Despite his accolades and contributions, Ice Prince says he never pursued music for validation. “I don’t make music for accolades or respect. I don’t even like titles like ‘legend’ or ‘OG.’ Music is beyond awards to me.”
