Senator Ireti Kingibe dumps Labour Party for ADC

Senator Ireti Kingibe, who represents the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in the National Assembly, has dumped the Labour Party (LP) for the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Kingibe announced her defection on Friday in Abuja, describing the move as a deliberate and well-considered political decision ahead of the 2027 general election.

“I’m totally and completely committed to ADC,” she told reporters. “But don’t expect me to just take a lunch break and go collect a card. I want to do so with noise and fanfare.”

The senator said she was joining a growing coalition and expressed confidence in the party’s direction, despite describing it as still “evolving.”

“It’s something that is evolving. You cannot say while your child is still crawling that you are not happy with how he’s going to run. You wait. We are growing.”

Kingibe also justified her exit from Labour Party on constitutional grounds, citing internal divisions within the party.

“If there were not two distinct factions of Labour Party, I would not presume to decamp, because that is unconstitutional,” she said. “But they are. And this is the definition the constitution gave why it would be okay to decamp to anywhere I wanted to go. I just chose ADC.”

Her official induction into the ADC is expected to be held soon.
