The Delta State Police Command has arrested a serving police officer, Sergeant Irimiya Iyas, for the killing of Uzuor Ezekiel, Secretary of the Ibiyima Community Development Association, in Asaba.
Iyas, who is attached to 57 Mobile Police (MOPOL) and posted to Chakel Beat, Asaba, was armed with an AK-47 rifle bearing breech number 09331 at the time of the incident.
According to the Delta State Police Command, Iyas reported himself at the Agbor Division, claiming he had accidentally shot Ezekiel.
Following the report, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and other officers moved swiftly to the scene and took the victim to the General Hospital, where the doctor on duty confirmed him dead.
Items recovered from the officer include one AK-47 rifle with four rounds of ammunition.
The sergeant was immediately arrested for questioning.
Meanwhile, police authorities have assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway and have promised to ensure that justice is served.
The killing has sent shockwaves through the local community, with residents demanding accountability and justice for the slain CDA official.
