President Bola Tinubu will depart Abuja on Sunday to attend the eighth-day prayer ceremony for the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who passed away on July 13, 2025, at the age of 91.

The ceremony will take place at the Dipo Dina Stadium in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, where the President will join Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun and other dignitaries to honour the revered monarch.

Oba Adetona, one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning traditional rulers, ascended the throne in 1960 and served for over 65 years.

His death, which coincided with the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, marked a significant loss for the Ijebu people and Nigeria’s traditional institutions.

The monarch was laid to rest on July 14, 2025, at Ogbagba Court in Igbeba, Ijebu-Ode, following a burial ceremony attended by prominent figures, including former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and business magnate Aliko Dangote.

President Tinubu, in a statement issued shortly after Oba Adetona’s passing, described the monarch as a “towering natural ruler” who served with dignity, wisdom, and an unwavering commitment to progress.

He highlighted the late Awujale’s contributions to Ijebuland’s development, including elevating the Ojude Oba festival to international prominence and establishing the Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona School of Governance Studies at Olabisi Onabanjo University.

The President also noted his personal bond with the monarch, calling him a confidante and a voice of reason during national crises.

The eighth-day prayer ceremony is a significant cultural and religious event in Yoruba tradition, marking a moment of reflection and prayer for the departed.

Oba Adetona’s legacy, characterized by his advocacy for education, philanthropy, and cultural preservation, continues to resonate across Nigeria.

The event is expected to draw leaders and citizens alike to celebrate the monarch’s enduring impact.
