He said the former ADC chairman, Ralph Nwosu’s term ended two years ago and he had no authority to hand over leadership for the coalition.

Bolaji Abdullahi, the National Publicity Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), says no governor wants to join the party because they are being threatened.

The ADC in Benue State also denied rumors that Governor Hyacinth Alia is funding the party to create an alternative platform for the 2027 elections.

Dumebi Kachikwu, the ADC’s 2023 presidential candidate, said the opposition coalition is likely to fail.

At a meeting in Abuja, Abdullahi explained that some governors are forced to support other presidential candidates even if they want to join ADC. He said, “No governor is willing to switch parties because of the intimidation they face. Some who can’t join us are spreading false claims that we support their presidential candidate. This is a conspiracy against Nigerians.”

This statement comes as political groups prepare for the 2027 elections. On July 1, several opposition leaders announced the ADC as a new coalition to challenge President Bola Tinubu.

These leaders include former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, former Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi, and former Kaduna Governor Nasir el-Rufai.

Former Senate President David Mark and former Osun Governor Rauf Aregbesola were named interim national chairman and secretary of the party. Despite this, no sitting governor has joined the coalition yet.

The Benue ADC chapter clarified that their activities are funded by party members and not Governor Alia, countering rumors spread by opponents.

In an interview, Kachikwu criticized the coalition, saying it will fail because of ongoing court cases about ADC leadership.

He said the former ADC chairman, Ralph Nwosu’s term ended two years ago and he had no authority to hand over leadership for the coalition.

He warned, “They are on a slippery path that will only end in failure. You cannot build something on nothing.” Kachikwu added that some members now regret joining the coalition without solving these leadership issues and have contacted him privately.
