'He hit a man and sped off'- Lagos lady recounts horror Uber ride that ended in police cell

A Lagos woman has shared an account of how an Uber ride turned into a nightmare involving a fatal accident, a high-speed getaway, and hours of detention at a police station.

The X user, known online as @chupachups, said her driver knocked down a dispatch rider on the road and immediately fled the scene with her still inside the vehicle, while refusing to let her alight.

“Jesus my uber driver just hit a man and he’s laying on the floor but he sped off they’re chasing us he won’t let me come down. Jesus christ,” she posted, sparking alarm among her followers.

Moments later, she confirmed the man had died on the spot. “The man he hit broke his head, died immediately,” she added. “They said I should follow to the police station.”

What followed was a harrowing series of events that ended with her being locked in a cell with male suspects at the Alausa Police Station in Ikeja.

“Worst day this year,” she later wrote after her release.

According to her, she refused to give any statement until her lawyer arrived. That insistence, she said, led to her being thrown into a holding cell for over three hours. “They poked and taunted me,” she claimed. “I stayed there the whole time I was waiting for my lawyer to arrive.”

When her lawyer eventually came, she said they were made to wait for her turn before she could give a formal statement. Then came another problem — police officers reportedly demanded that she delete the videos she had recorded at the station before her phone was confiscated.

“We had a hassle on whether to delete the videos… we deleted,” she posted. “After which we were allowed to leave.”

The family of the Uber driver reportedly arrived at the station while she was still there, but she made her position clear: “It’s not my business what happens to him.”

Chupa Chups, whose bio describes her as an “ambitious. finance & marketing girlie”, ended her account by thanking those who had reached out, adding, “I just want to make it home tonight.”

As of this time, the Lagos State Police Command has not issued any statement regarding the incident or the claims of harassment and unlawful detention.
