Presidency fires back at critics over Super Falcons’ 150 million Naira reward

Quick Read

Onanuga posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account, saying he was surprised some Nigerians were criticizing the reward. He questioned why people were upset about such a generous gesture.

The President’s Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has defended President Tinubu’s gift to the Super Falcons after they won the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

Onanuga posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account, saying he was surprised some Nigerians were criticizing the reward. He questioned why people were upset about such a generous gesture.

He compared it to the BBNaija reality show, where the winner gets ₦150 million. He asked why people are okay with that but upset about rewarding female footballers who made the country proud.

Onanuga said President Tinubu was simply showing appreciation for the team’s hard work, talent, and dedication to Nigeria.

According to the report, each Super Falcons player was given $100,000 (about ₦150 million), while each coach and support staff member got $50,000. They were also all awarded national honors — Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).

In addition, each team member will receive a three-bedroom house through the government’s housing scheme.
