The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a suspect in connection with the gruesome murder of a caregiver and a toddler at a school in the Dawaki area of Abuja.

The victims, 55-year-old Mrs Chinyere Anaene, a nurse with Clear Hope Foundation Academy, and one-year-two-month-old Nanenter Yese, were reported missing on July 23.

According to the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the matter took a disturbing turn when Anaene’s husband received a ransom demand of ₦250 million via her mobile phone while filing a report at the police station.

Prompted by the urgency of the case, the command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit launched a swift investigation using digital forensic tools.

The search led officers to Yelwa and Uke communities in Nasarawa State, where a breakthrough was made.

On July 29, detectives arrested a security guard employed at the school. During interrogation, the suspect confessed to plotting the crime alongside his best friend, who is currently on the run.

SP Adeh disclosed that the suspect lured Anaene to a secluded bathroom on the school premises, where she was brutally strangled.

He then proceeded to take the toddler from a classroom and killed him in the same manner.

In a chilling account of the aftermath, the suspect admitted to concealing both bodies in a sack and transporting them using a scavenger’s cart before dumping them in a canal.

He later led police to the location, where the decomposed remains were recovered.

The FCT Police Command has extended its condolences to the bereaved families and assured the public that every effort is being made to apprehend the second suspect and ensure justice is served. (NAN)
