Albanian international striker Armando Broja is set to embark on a new chapter in his career, with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirming that the 23-year-old has completed the main part of his medical tests with Burnley, finalizing a permanent transfer from Chelsea.
The deal marks the end of Broja’s 16-year association with the Blues, where he progressed through their academy but struggled to secure a consistent first-team role.
The agreement between Chelsea and newly promoted Premier League side Burnley signals the Clarets’ ambition to bolster their attacking options under manager Scott Parker as they aim to secure their top-flight status.
Sources indicate the transfer fee could be worth up to £20 million, though the exact figure remains unconfirmed. Broja is expected to sign a long-term contract with Burnley, with the move likely to be finalized early next week.
Broja, who joined Chelsea’s academy in 2009, showed immense promise early in his career. He enjoyed successful loan spells at Vitesse Arnhem, where he scored 11 goals in 34 appearances, and Southampton, where he netted nine goals in 38 games during the 2021-22 season.
However, injuries, including a significant ACL rupture in December 2022 and subsequent Achilles and ankle issues, disrupted his progress.
His most recent loan at Everton last season saw him make just 12 appearances without scoring, hampered by injuries.
“Armando Broja’s transfer to Burnley will be permanent. He will complete his medical in the next 24 hours and sign a long-term deal with Burnley. Chelsea accepted the conditions. Here we go,” Romano posted on X, signaling the completion of negotiations.
The move offers Broja a fresh start at Turf Moor, where he will compete with forwards like Zian Flemming and Lyle Foster for a starting spot. Burnley, fresh off their Championship runners-up finish, have been active in the transfer market, adding players like Bashir Humphreys, Jaidon Anthony, and Marcus Edwards to their squad.
Parker will be keen to unlock Broja’s potential, banking on the striker’s physicality and goal-scoring instincts to help the Clarets avoid a relegation battle.
Chelsea, under manager Enzo Maresca, have been reshaping their squad, with Broja’s departure following the exits of João Félix to Al-Nassr and Marc Guiu on loan to Sunderland. The Blues have bolstered their forward line with signings like Liam Delap and Joao Pedro, leaving no room for Broja in their plans.
The club has also offloaded players like Noni Madueke, Djordje Petrovic, and Kepa Arrizabalaga, raising over £130 million in transfer fees this summer, with Broja’s move potentially pushing that figure closer to £150 million.
Broja, who has earned 25 caps for Albania and scored at the 2024 European Championship, will aim to rediscover the form that once made him a highly touted prospect. “There’s way more to come from me,” Broja said in April, expressing optimism about playing pain-free after his injury setbacks.
