The men’s 100m final at the 2025 Road to Tokyo National Athletics Trials thrilled fans at the Yaba College of Technology in Lagos on Saturday.
The event reached a fever pitch as Israel Okon emerged as Nigeria’s new 100m champion, clocking an impressive time of 10.04 seconds.
Defending champion Kanyinsola Ajayi was absent due to a minor injury sustained before the semifinals.
He is now aiming to contribute to Nigeria’s 4x100m relay team as they seek qualification for the World Championship in Tokyo.
Close behind Okon was Alaba Akintola, who finished second with 10.05 seconds, while Fakorede Nicholas claimed third place at 10.07 seconds. The remaining top finishers included:
- Seye Ogunlewe – 4th (10.09s)
- Olaolu Olatunde – 5th (10.15s)
- James Taiwo Emmanuel – 6th (10.16s)
- Enoch Adegoke – 7th (10.20s)
- Igube ThankGod – 8th

“I’m very happy right now to be the national champion,” he said. “In Tokyo, anything can happen. I’m trusting my coach, Coach Ken, and I’m ready for whatever lies ahead as we prepare for the World Championship.”
