Dr Umma-Hani Jafaru, President of the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN) Bauchi Chapter, says early initiation of breastfeeding by mothers, ideally within 30 minutes of delivery, is crucial.
She said this during an enlightenment event organised by the chapter in collaboration with the AIM/MNCH Project at the Miri Primary Health Care Centre in Bauchi.
She highlighted the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months.
“These include a reduced risk of postpartum hemorrhage, natural birth spacing, and a lower risk of breast cancer.
“Breast milk alone provides all the nutrients a baby needs for healthy growth and development,” Jafaru is quoted by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
She also encouraged women to adopt exclusive breastfeeding and called on husbands to offer emotional and practical support to their partners during the breastfeeding period.
She called for a reinforced support systems for nursing mothers.
The event, which also featured health education sessions for pregnant women during antenatal care visits, was part of activities to mark the 2025 World Breastfeeding Week.
