Chaos in Zamfara: Bandits overrun village, nine security operatives missing in fierce Fight
Quick Read
The attackers, part of the notorious armed groups plaguing Nigeria’s northwest, targeted residents in a coordinated raid, a pattern consistent with the region’s escalating banditry crisis.
A wave of terror swept through Adabka Village in Bukkuyum Local Government Area of Zamfara State as heavily armed bandits launched a brazen attack on Thursday night, kidnapping an unknown number of residents and sparking a deadly confrontation with security forces.
The assault, which occurred around 8:32 p.m., has left the community reeling, with four hostages rescued but nine security operatives-two Police Mobile Force (PMF) personnel and seven Civilian Joint Task Force (JTF) members reported missing after a fierce gun battle.
According to security analyst Zagazola Makama, the bandits descended on the village outskirts in large numbers, overwhelming the area with their firepower.
The attackers, part of the notorious armed groups plaguing Nigeria’s northwest, targeted residents in a coordinated raid, a pattern consistent with the region’s escalating banditry crisis.
Zamfara State has been a hotspot for such attacks, with bandits exploiting ungoverned spaces to carry out abductions for ransom, cattle rustling, and violence.
Joint security forces stationed in the area responded rapidly, engaging the bandits in a prolonged firefight.
The clash resulted in the successful rescue of four abducted villagers, a small victory in the face of overwhelming odds.
However, the operation came at a steep cost: two PMF officers and seven Civilian JTF members remain unaccounted for, raising fears they may have been killed, captured, or lost in the chaos.
Security sources, speaking anonymously, confirmed that search and rescue operations are underway to locate the missing operatives and any additional abducted residents.
The incident underscores the relentless danger faced by security forces and local vigilantes in Zamfara, where banditry has claimed thousands of lives and displaced tens of thousands.
A 2024 report by the International Crisis Group noted that over 8,000 people were killed or abducted in northwest Nigeria between 2020 and 2023, with Zamfara among the hardest hit.
A Region Under Siege
Adabka Village’s ordeal is the latest in a string of attacks that have terrorized Zamfara communities. Bandits, often operating from vast forest enclaves like the Kamuku and Kuyambana forests, have turned the state into a battleground, targeting rural villages with impunity.
Web sources indicate that similar raids in 2025 have led to hundreds of abductions, with ransom payments fueling the bandits’ operations.
The Nigerian government’s efforts, including military operations and peace deals, have yielded mixed results, with critics arguing that poorly armed Civilian JTF units are ill-equipped to confront heavily armed groups wielding sophisticated weapons.
Residents of Adabka, already burdened by years of violence, now face heightened fear. A local source, quoted on X, described the attack as “a nightmare that keeps repeating,” noting that villagers live in constant dread of night raids.
The loss of nine security operatives has further eroded confidence, with some users on X questioning the safety of those tasked with protecting communities.
