Ondo State has confirmed 12 cases of Mpox in eight local government areas and has commenced a targeted vaccination campaign to contain its spread.

Director of Disease Control at the Ondo State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (OSPHDA), Dr. Victor Adefesoye, disclosed this during a stakeholders’ meeting on Mpox vaccination in Akure on Monday.

Adefesoye said the disease, once thought to be transmitted only by monkeys, is now known to spread through various animals and human contact.

According to him, the vaccination exercise, which runs from August 11 to 21, will focus on adults aged 18 and above who have tested positive, their close contacts, and health workers who have treated them.

“The disease is already with us in Ondo State, particularly in Akoko South-West, Akoko North-West, Akoko North-East, Owo, Akure South, Akure North, Ondo East, and Odigbo.

“We have identified the targeted persons, contacted them, and will also vaccinate their close relatives and health workers. Stakeholders must encourage them to get vaccinated,” he said.

He stressed the need for residents to maintain personal and environmental hygiene to curb further spread.

State Immunisation Officer, Mrs. Florence Fadiji, explained that Mpox can be transmitted through contact with infected animals, persons, or contaminated objects. Symptoms include body sores, rashes, fever, headache, and general weakness.

She noted that while the vaccine may cause mild reactions, the benefits far outweigh the risks.

Permanent Secretary of OSPHDA, Dr. Francis Akanbiemu, urged stakeholders to use their influence in communities to mobilise eligible persons for vaccination, describing the campaign as crucial to the state’s health security.
