NEH celebrates Yusuf Akinbola’s entrepreneurial impact on product innovation

Michael Adesina

At the recent National Entrepreneurship Honors (NEH), Yusuf Akinbola, a digital entrepreneur with a strong background in product management, was honored with the Outstanding Entrepreneur of the Year.

The recognition highlights his leadership in building high-impact digital products that are not only technically sound, but strategically aligned with the realities and needs of African users.

The award, which celebrates individuals advancing scalable solutions in technology, was presented by Dr. Chuka Ezeani, Director General of the National Entrepreneurship Research Institute. Speaking at a gathering of diplomats, innovation leaders, and digital economy experts, Dr. Ezeani emphasized the importance of Yusuf’s approach:

“His expertise in agile methodologies, user-centered design, and long-term product vision has made a measurable difference. Yusuf Akinbola represents the kind of leadership our ecosystem needs; strategic, inclusive, and relentlessly focused on real user outcomes.”

He has led the development of consumer-facing services, enterprise platforms, and award-winning mobile products across different sectors. His standout achievement came with the launch of a transformative e-commerce platform that gained tens of thousands of active users within its first year, redefining how Nigerians interact with digital marketplaces and setting a new standard for payment integration and shopping behavior in the country.

But his impact goes far beyond a single product. His leadership has shaped how product teams operate, from vision to release. Known for his collaborative approach, he has consistently built cross-functional teams that deliver products anchored in data, relevance, and real user feedback.

At the award ceremony, members of past product teams spoke about his ability to unify engineers, designers, marketers, and analysts around clear goals, turning fragmented ideas into usable systems.

His influence also extends into the broader product management landscape. He has authored respected articles on building for African users, spoken at industry events on product strategy in emerging markets, and mentored the next generation of product professionals through structured fellowships and accelerators. His work has helped define best practices for a continent where context must be designed into every solution.

By honoring Akinbola, the NEH is recognizing more than a track record of execution.

It affirms the role of entrepreneurial product leaders in shaping the future of digital infrastructure, those who not only build for today’s users, but who anticipate the systems needed for tomorrow’s growth.
