Mr Peter Obi has faulted the Federal Government’s move to increase the salaries of political office holders, calling it insensitive and unjustifiable at a time when Nigerians are groaning under economic hardship.

The proposal, announced by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), would see President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, ministers, senators and other leaders enjoy a pay rise.

But Obi, in a statement on Wednesday night, said the move prioritises “leaders’ greed over people’s welfare.”

“The recent proposal by RMAFC to increase the salaries of political leaders is causing widespread anger and bitterness. Such thinking in the face of eroding living standards portrays insensitivity and exposes greed,” he said.

Obi described the plan as a “shameless grab” by politicians, insisting public office should be about service, not wealth.

He urged the government to focus instead on improving the welfare of security agencies and public workers, especially police officers, who remain underpaid and overstretched.

“We call on RMAFC to prioritise the welfare of Nigerians in public service who have been neglected for too long,” he added.
