Six suspected kidnappers linked to the abduction of the Director of Sobaz Oil and Gas on Azumiri Road, Ukwa East, have been killed in a shootout with operatives of the Abia State Police Command.
Police spokesman, Maureen Chinaka, said the suspects were traced to Ikot Ukpon village in Obot Akara LGA of Akwa Ibom State on Thursday night following credible intelligence.
Items recovered from the hideout included two AK-47 rifles, 57 rounds of live ammunition, a locally made pistol, six magazines, and a bag of charms.
Chinaka explained that while leaving the hideout, operatives were ambushed by other members of the gang, leading to a fierce gun battle in which the six suspects sustained fatal injuries while attempting to flee.
Two policemen were also shot in the crossfire and are receiving treatment.
The suspects were allegedly behind the March 4, 2025 abduction which claimed the lives of ASP Tanko Naptip of CTU Rivers, businessman Anayo Ukwu, and a filling station owner, Chidozie Confidence Chijioke.
Abia Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa, vowed to intensify operations, warning that criminals in the state would have no hiding place.
