Tottenham Hotspur delivered a masterclass in resilience and clinical finishing, securing a 2-0 upset against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

The match, marked by controversial VAR decisions and defensive heroics, saw Spurs capitalise on City’s errors to claim three vital Premier League points.

The game started with City asserting early pressure. In the 28th minute, Omar Marmoush carved out space in the box and unleashed a fierce shot, only to be denied by a spectacular save from Tottenham’s goalkeeper, Guglielmo Vicario. The Italian’s reflexes set the tone for Spurs’ defensive resolve.

Tottenham struck first in the 35th minute, though not without drama. Brennan Johnson thought he had opened the scoring, only for VAR to disallow the goal for an offside in the build-up.

Moments later, Johnson redeemed himself, latching onto a precise pass from Richarlison to fire a clinical strike into the middle of the goal, putting Spurs 1-0 up. The Etihad crowd was stunned, and City’s defence looked rattled.

Controversy continued to swirl in the 39th minute when Pedro Porro went down in the box after a challenge. Referee Peter Bankes initially waved play on but signaled for a VAR review.

After a tense wait, Bankes upheld his decision, denying Tottenham a penalty and sparking frustration among the Spurs faithful.

Just before halftime, Tottenham doubled their lead through a catastrophic error from City’s defence. Joao Palhinha pounced on a loose ball, rolling it into an empty net from close range to make it 2-0 in first half added time. The goal exposed City’s uncharacteristic vulnerability, leaving Pep Guardiola visibly frustrated on the sidelines.

The second half saw City push for a comeback, but Tottenham’s defence, marshaled by Vicario, stood firm.

In the 83rd minute, Bernardo Silva came close with a header from Nathan Ake’s cross, but the effort sailed just over the bar. As the clock ticked into stoppage time, Dominic Solanke’s mazy run and low drive tested City’s goalkeeper James Trafford, who made a smart save.

Wilson Odobert’s follow-up header was also thwarted by Trafford’s reflexes, preserving the 2-0 scoreline.
