The Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere, Lagos, was electrified on Saturday night as Nigerian boxing legend Ike Ibeabuchi, aged 52, made a sensational return to the ring after a 26-year hiatus, delivering a commanding performance against rising star Idris Afinni.

The sold-out event, pulsating with anticipation, ended in the third round when Afinni’s corner threw in the towel, cementing Ibeabuchi’s enduring prowess in a thrilling display that captivated the nation.

Ibeabuchi, born Ikemefula Charles Ibeabuchi on February 2, 1973, in Isuochi, Abia State, Nigeria, is a former professional heavyweight boxer whose career from 1994 to 1999 left an indelible mark on the sport.

Inspired to box after witnessing Buster Douglas’s stunning knockout of Mike Tyson in 1990, Ibeabuchi abandoned plans to join the Nigerian military and pursued a path in the ring.

As an amateur, he twice defeated fellow Nigerian Duncan Dokiwari, a 1996 Olympic bronze medalist, before relocating to Dallas, Texas, in 1993 with his mother.

There, under the mentorship of former world welterweight champion Curtis Cokes, he won the Dallas and Texas State Golden Gloves tournaments in 1994.

Turning professional that same year, Ibeabuchi amassed an undefeated record of 20-0, with 15 knockouts, including iconic victories over undefeated contender David Tua in 1997 and future world champion Chris Byrd in 1999.

His 1997 bout against Tua set a CompuStat record for the most punches thrown in a heavyweight fight, with Ibeabuchi landing an astonishing 975 punches.

However, his promising career was derailed by legal troubles in 1999, leading to multiple prison sentences that kept him out of the ring for over two decades.

The atmosphere at the stadium was electric as fans filled every seat, their cheers blending into a roaring chorus of support for both fighters.

Ibeabuchi, known for his relentless power and agility despite his age, faced off against Afinni, a 40-year-old Nigerian heavyweight with a record of 18-8-2, who had been making waves in the local scene with 15 knockouts.

The clash pitted Ibeabuchi’s seasoned expertise against Afinni’s ambition, with the younger fighter openly stating his goal to knock out his childhood idol to cement his own legacy.

From the opening bell, Ibeabuchi showcased the skills that once made him a feared contender. His footwork remained sharp, allowing him to glide around the ring while delivering precise, powerful punches.

Afinni, despite his speed and heart, struggled to counter Ibeabuchi’s calculated aggression. The veteran systematically dismantled Afinni’s defences, landing devastating blows that left the younger fighter reeling.

By the third round, Ibeabuchi’s dominance was undeniable, and with Afinni unable to mount a significant comeback, his corner made the pragmatic decision to end the bout, handing Ibeabuchi a technical knockout victory. The win extended his professional record to 21-0, with 16 knockouts.

The Lagos crowd erupted in applause, celebrating Ibeabuchi’s triumphant return.
