Lagos State recorded 8,692 cases of domestic and sexual violence between August 2024 and July 2025, PM News has gathered.

The state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro, disclosed this on Friday during a press briefing held in Ikeja to mark Domestic and Sexual Violence Awareness Month. He explained that domestic violence accounted for 3,685 cases, the highest during the period.

Pedro, represented by the Solicitor-General, Hameed Oyenuga, said the youngest survivor was an 18-month-old baby while the oldest was 79 years old, stressing that abuse cuts across all age groups. He added that the government remained committed to a zero-tolerance policy on sexual and gender-based violence, noting that over 140 convictions were secured and six restraining orders issued within the year.

He gave further details, stating that there were 243 cases of defilement, 244 of child abuse and physical assault, 99 of rape, 48 of sexual harassment, and 25 of sexual assault by penetration. Family-related disputes were put at 726, cyber harassment at 41, and threats to life at 32.

According to him, 3,090 children exposed to domestic violence received counselling, 146 survivors were provided free legal support, and all victims of sexual assault accessed free medical care. Thirty survivors were accommodated in government shelters, while 1,487 survivors and 249 perpetrators underwent therapy. He added that 13 persons with disabilities also received specialised assistance.

Pedro identified Alimosho, Eti-Osa, Ikorodu, Kosofe, and Oshodi-Isolo as the local governments with the highest adult-related cases. For child-related cases, Ikorodu, Kosofe, Badagry, Alimosho, and Oshodi-Isolo topped the list.

The attorney general assured that Lagos State would continue to support survivors and uphold justice in its fight against domestic and sexual violence.
