Reports from California on Sunday revealed that state officials have stepped in to provide alternative protection once the federal cover officially ends.
Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass are said to have been involved in discussions that led to the decision, though Newsom’s office declined to give details, stressing that “the safety of public officials should never be subject to erratic, vindictive political impulses.”
Harris, who left office in January, had originally been granted extended Secret Service cover until July 2026 under a directive from Joe Biden’s administration. Trump’s reversal has sparked criticism, with Bass describing it as “another act of revenge.”
With the shift, Harris will lose round-the-clock federal agents and intelligence support, but California Highway Patrol is now expected to take over her security.
Traditionally, vice presidents receive only six months of protection after leaving office, while presidents enjoy lifetime cover. Only Dick Cheney, in 2009, had previously been granted extended protection beyond the usual term.
