Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner has won the deadline-day battle to keep his captain, Marc Guehi, shattering Liverpool’s £35m transfer hopes.
The Reds believed they had their man, with Guehi even completing his medical in London on Sunday. A farewell video was ready, teammates urged him to say goodbye, and Anfield was braced for his arrival.
But in a stunning twist, Palace chairman Steve Parish pulled the plug, unable to secure a replacement defender before the window slammed shut. Glasner, who had insisted Guehi must stay for Palace to have a successful season, got his way.
Liverpool, left frustrated, will now rely on Virgil van Dijk, the injury-prone Ibrahima Konaté, Joe Gomez, and 18-year-old Giovanni Leoni.
For Guehi, the story isn’t over. With less than a year left on his contract, he can walk away for free next summer — and top clubs across England and Europe are already circling.
Palace may have saved their season, but they just lost £35m.
