“Whenever we discussed politics, he always told me, ‘Wherever Jonathan is, that’s where I’ll be.’ That kind of loyalty is rare in today’s politics.”

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has decried the culture of dishonesty and betrayal that pervades Nigeria’s political landscape, stating that very few allies in politics can be trusted to remain loyal.

He made the remarks on Thursday in Benin City, Edo State, during the 70th birthday celebration of his longtime associate and former Chief of Staff, Chief Mike Oghiadomhe, who also served as deputy governor of Edo State from 1999 to 2007.

The well-attended event drew a crowd of political heavyweights and dignitaries, including former governors Lucky Igbinedion, Osarhiemen Osunbor, Adams Oshiomhole, Ibrahim Dankwambo of Gombe State, and other notable figures.

In a candid reflection on his political journey, Jonathan said: “I became President, and even after leaving office, one of the few people I could trust to give up their neck for me is Mike. You know, politics in the Nigerian context is about betrayals.

“It is difficult to find someone who says the same thing in the morning and the evening. I witnessed a lot of betrayals—especially during the 2015 elections. But Mike is someone who would take a bullet on my behalf.”

Jonathan’s 2015 electoral loss to Muhammadu Buhari marked a significant political shift in Nigeria’s democratic history. His remarks at the event allude to how internal divisions and betrayals within his party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), may have contributed to his defeat.

Other speakers at the event praised Oghiadomhe’s loyalty, dedication, and contribution to Edo State and Nigeria.

Edo State Deputy Governor, Dennis Idahosa, who represented Governor Monday Okpebholo, noted that the administrative structures Oghiadomhe laid as deputy governor are still relevant today.

Former Governor Lucky Igbinedion, under whom Oghiadomhe served as deputy, said: “I had no hesitation handing over the reins of power to Mike whenever I traveled. He was dependable.”

Former APC National Chairman and ex-governor Adams Oshiomhole also paid glowing tribute to the celebrant:

“Whenever we discussed politics, he always told me, ‘Wherever Jonathan is, that’s where I’ll be.’ That kind of loyalty is rare in today’s politics.”

He also acknowledged Oghiadomhe’s wife, Louisa, for being a pillar of support to her husband over the years.
