Osun To Distribute 150,000 Mini-Computers In Schools

The Osun Government is to distribute 150,000 computer tablets to teachers and students of secondary schools.

The governor made the disclosure while answering questions from newsmen at a news conference to mark his one year in office on Friday in Osogbo.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the computer tablet is a handy device designed to make learners have close access to their studies anytime and anywhere.

NAN also learnt that the computer tablet was designed by a computer company in China and made available to the state on the request of government.

Aregbesola said the mini-computer was his brain child, following his tour of India and China to find out the latest technological discoveries in educational development.

He said the poor performance of students from the state in final examinations conducted by WAEC, NECO and JAMB made him to embark on the mission.

“Such woeful failures are no longer acceptable. From now on, no student will enter our school and fail because from the first year, a student must have a computer tablet,” he said.

He said the computer tablet, which contains a storage device for text books, syllabuses and lesson notes, would greatly enhance performance.

“Teachers are to get 20,000 computer tablets while the senior secondary school students will get 130,000 making 150 tablets in all.

“The computer tablets are to be supplied free to the beneficiaries with solar charger in view of the present epileptic power supply.

“The devices are insured while the package has a guarantee of 12 months within which the manufacturers will accept responsibility for malfunctioning,” he said.

The governor also said the device could contain 39 subjects and all a student needed to do was just to press a code for any subject to appear on the screen.

He said that the Chinese company had accepted the invitation to come and establish a computer manufacturing company in the state to produce the product.

Earlier, the NUJ President, Malam Garba Muhammed, lauded the initiatives of the governor and advised him not to relent in his efforts to develop the state.

Muhammed also called on the media to support the governor to ease the task of developing the state.
