The Acting Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Prof. Carol Chinyelugo Arinze-Umobi, has ordered disciplinary action against a staff member, Nnaji Kenneth, accused of collecting N400,000 from a parent under the guise of securing admission.
Kenneth, who works in the Personnel Unit (Statistics) of the Registry Department, allegedly collected the money from the mother of a prospective student, promising her son admission into Medicine.
When the deal later shifted to Nursing Science, the woman raised alarm after Kenneth reportedly stopped answering her calls. She petitioned the Acting VC directly, leading to Kenneth’s arrest by the university authorities.
In a statement by the Acting Head of Information and Public Relations, Louis Njelita, the accused was said to have admitted to the allegation in the presence of top university officials, including the Chief Safety Officer, Chief Legal Officer, and the PRO.
The Acting VC, Prof. Arinze-Umobi, restated that “admission is free” in UNIZIK and vowed that the matter has been referred to the disciplinary committee for appropriate sanctions.
The case has sent ripples across the campus, with many seeing it as a warning to staff tempted by admission racketeering.
